Pretzel Recipe

My husband loves pretzels, especially the soft pretzels. We walked by a stand at the mall the other day and boy did they smell so good. I told him I would make him some at home.

I had never made homemade pretzels before so this was a new adventure. It proved to be a yummy one though.

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1½ cup of lukewarm water
  • 1 (.25 oz) package active dry yeast
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 heaping tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • pretzel salt
Instructions
  1. Mix together the lukewarm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes or until it gets foamy. If it doesn't foam, discard and start over.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt with a whisk.
  3. Add in the yeast mixture and stir until it forms dough.
  4. Dust your work area with a bit of flour and knead your dough for 8 minutes. Feel free to add a bit of flour should the dough get too sticky. After the 8 minutes, your dough should be smooth and slightly sticky.
  5. Place your dough back into the bowl and cover tightly.
  6. Place your dough in a slightly warmer than room temperature room and let it rise for about 45 minutes.
  7. Once the dough is done rising, dust your work area with flour again.
  8. Cut your dough into 8 parts.
  9. Take one part and roll it out into what resembles a rope. This should be close to 24 inches long.
  10. Twist your dough into it's pretzel shape.
  11. Place the formed pretzel on a greased cookie sheet.
  12. Repeat these steps for the remaining 7 pieces of dough.
  13. Let the formed pretzels sit on the cookie sheet for 20 minutes.
  14. While the pretzels are resting, boil water in a large pot. When it reaches a boil add the baking soda.
  15. Place a couple of the pretzels in the boiling water using your hands. Let them boil on one side for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Then use your tongs to flip them and boil on the other side for 1 minute and 30 seconds. (this helps to keep the pretzel shape)
  16. Repeat with the rest of the pretzels.
  17. Once boiled, place the pretzels on a greased cookie sheet.
  18. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg.
  19. Add the pretzel salt.
  20. Bake in the oven at 425 for about 16 minutes, or until the pretzels are golden brown.
